It's been a while since I have posted on the tutorial forums but I want to share this information with new pilots and old pilots a like. Below I am going to share some secret trick and trades of how to be a more smart aggressive dropship pilot when engaging HAV's, Installations, and Infantry.:
HAV's: Since the most recent updates for 1.8, Alpha to Charlie, Dropships can now destroy tanks. Though it is a much tougher objective, it can still be done.
1 All types of HAV's are horrible at turning compared to a Dropship and LAV, however they can move backwards and forwards very well. When HAV's start going in reverse then back forward, they are hoping that you over shoot, pass them completely over, so they can escape. When HAV's are doing this, don't engage them with straight attacks, but use the dropships ability to strafe left and right to your advantage, making wide circular swings around the HAV. Don't forget to keep your turret pointed at it as well. This will help you assure the hostile HAV is eliminated
2. When HAV's are trying to drive away, your most important thing to monitor is your speed and aiming. Pilots call this angle of approach. Create to big of an approach angle than you need and you will over shoot your moving ground target or if the HAV user decides to do the reverse and forward method mentioned above you will be prepared to stop while still shooting.
AV: There are only two types of AV users in the game. Those who will shoot non stop and do not realize there is a skill needed for AV, and those who understand this. 9/10 you will meet less skilled AV users who will either shoot swarms until they run dry or continue forging until they are empty and need to reload.
1. If an swarm launcher user has you marked for death and you want to turn the tides of the fight, the first thing you want to do is eliminate nanohives, and uplinks near them. Uplinks just makes it possible for more to join the, "Kill the Dropship," party. Nanohives are also going to keep them swarming at you with almost a never ending supply. After that is done create large space between you and the swarm launcher. Because you are attacking from the air you can attack them from any direction. Use this, and try not to attack them straight on from where they saw you last. The final part is to continue doing strafe attacks, or quick attacks and flying off, depending how powerful the swarms are effecting you.
2. Another method for attacking Swarm Launcher and Forge Gunner users is to wait them out. You want to use the dropships weakness of being an easy big target in the sky to your advantage. Keep a good high speed firing from your turret only to keep their attention on you. More than likely they will continue to fire shots at you until they use up their ammo. When this happens you can engage them and kill them without having to worry about taking fatal damage to your dropship. If the AV player has nanohives or uplinks near then follow the step above in removing them before you keep bating the AV user to deplete their ammo.
